The letter reads as follows:

Dear Faith Leaders,

We are writing to offer you reassurance and support at this worrying time.

The incident that took place in Southport last week is truly heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the bereaved and injured. At a time when communities need to come together to heal, the violent disorder and intimidation that has been taking place up and down the country is tearing communities apart. We are outraged at the wave of violence that has spread across the country.

The far right have exploited this moment and it's especially worrying to see Muslim communities being targeted.

In Haringey we will do all we can to ensure our communities feel supported. We have been in contact with our local police who have increased patrols in the borough and we will work with you as community leaders in partnership to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against those who seek to divide. We are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone in our diverse community.  Details on what to do if you need to report anything are attached.

Our community safety team has been out visiting places of worship over the weekend and will continue to reach out to Mosques and places of worship in the days ahead.

We are pleased that the government has put in place a new rapid response process so that mosques at risk of violent disorder can be offered additional security personnel this is on top of the existing Protective Security for Mosques Scheme, with up to £29.4 million already available this year to fund security at mosques and Muslim faith schools.

The Prime Minister and Home Secretary have made it clear that those who have taken part in violence should be in no doubt they will face the full force of the law.

Haringey is a diverse and vibrant borough and we must come together during these challenging times. We stand united in condemning these acts of violence and remain vigilant against those that seek to divide us. There is no place for hate in Haringey.

Please do get in touch if you need any support at this time.

Yours Sincerely

Cllr Peray Ahmet                                    Andy Donald

Leader – Haringey Council                    Chief Executive – Haringey Council
