Neglect remains one of the most severe and widespread forms of child abuse, and this campaign strives to amplify the voices of children and young people who are suffering in silence.
According to NSPCC statistics, one in 10 children have experienced neglect. While younger children in England are more likely to be on a child protection plan due to neglect, though research indicates shows that neglect in older children is more often overlooked and unreported.
In addition to this, nearly 37,000 child cruelty offenses were recorded by police in the UK during 2023/24 and this number is increasing. These statistics emphasise how serious and harmful neglect can be, affecting a large proportion of these tragic cases.
Cllr Zena Brabazon, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools, and Families at Haringey Council, said:
Protecting our children is a responsibility we all share. Neglect can have a profound and long-lasting impact on a child’s physical and emotional well-being and is something we need to tackle as soon as we can.
Signs of Neglect are not always obvious and often go unnoticed, but with heightened awareness and vigilance, we can prevent children in Haringey from suffering in silence.
Promoting campaigns like this is so important and reporting any concerns you may have is crucial—it could be the first step towards safeguarding a child's well-being and future.
Together, we can ensure that every child in Haringey has the chance to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment.
