Causes of food poisoning
Food poisoning is caused by eating something that has been contaminated with bacteria.
This can happen if food is:
- not cooked or reheated thoroughly
- not stored correctly – for example, it has not been frozen or chilled
- left out for too long
- handled by someone who is ill or has not washed their hands
- eaten after its 'use by' date
Businesses need to ensure that they comply with food safety and hygiene standards to minimise risks of food poisoning.
Read more about food poisoning on the Food Standards Agency website.
