What we do in an emergency

Part of: How we deal with major emergencies

We have staff who deal with emergencies. They are:

  • the emergency planning and resilience team who provide their skills and knowledge to make sure emergency plans are followed
  • strategic officers, usually the chief executive or a deputy, who provide overall direction of the response to critical or major incidents
  • local authority liaison officers who visit the incident scene and work with emergency services
  • duty officers from different departments who respond to an emergency
  • emergency centre managers who run emergency centres, including rest centres, if residents need shelter and support following an evacuation
  • the Haringey emergency response team who are a team of trained volunteers who help in an emergency
  • Haringey borough emergency control centre team who support information sharing and coordination during major incidents

During a major emergency we continue our normal day-to-day services to residents. If we’re affected by the emergency, we’ll manage this as set out in our business continuity plan.

During an emergency we may:

  • provide support to emergency services
  • provide support and care to the local and wider community
  • use resources to lessen the effects of an emergency
  • coordinate a response by organisations other than the emergency services

At the scene of an emergency, we may provide:

  • traffic management
  • emergency repair to roads
  • information to the police from CCTV
  • environmental health advice
  • emergency housing repairs
  • waste management and street cleaning
