About the Healthy Schools Programme

Background

The Haringey Healthy Schools Programme aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people across the borough. It uses a whole-school approach and focuses on improving schools’ health-promoting environments, reducing health inequalities, and supporting pupils, staff and the wider community to develop healthy behaviours.

This scheme is sponsored by the Mayor of London as part of the London Healthy Schools Awards Programme. These awards recognise and celebrate those schools that are making a difference for their pupils and staff and guides and supports schools in working towards Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

Benefits for schools

Haringey schools receive many benefits from the Haringey Healthy Schools Programme, such as:

  • Resources and support to implement a whole-school approach to health and wellbeing (PDF), alongside ongoing support for any health and wellbeing-related issues you may see in your schools
  • Regular newsletters and network meetings packed with local information and up to date guidance and support. To sign up for the newsletter or the network meetings, please email healthy.schools@haringey.gov.uk
  • On-going support to Healthy School leads. This includes guidance and support for Healthy School leads to work towards Bronze, Silver or Gold Healthy Schools Awards
  • Access to free or subsidised resources and support programmes, which are commissioned as part of the Healthy Schools Programme by Haringey Public Health Team
  • Opportunities for training and professional development opportunities for school staff in key areas such as RSHE, Asthma, and mental health
  • Increased opportunities for pupils to take part in physical activity and other health-promoting activities inside and outside of the school curriculum
  • Data and analysis on your school’s performance and the health and wellbeing needs of your children and young people
  • Evidence for OFSTED inspections on children's wellbeing as well their RSHE curriculum
  • Improved links with other schools and the wider community
  • Improved health and wellbeing outcomes for pupils, staff and the wider school community

Haringey Healthy Schools network meetings

Haringey hosts a Healthy Schools Network Meeting each school term for leads within schools. These network meetings provide a unique opportunity to learn about the latest evidence, share good practice, and meet other key professionals who contribute to the Healthy Schools programme.

The Haringey Healthy Schools Network Meeting dates for the 2024/25 academic year are:

  • 12 November 2024, 9.30-11.30am
  • 6 March 2025, 9.30-11.30am
  • 22 May 2025, 9.30-11.30am
