Building Confidence in Literacy

Course Details

What is this course about?

This course, based in Wood Green Library, will help build confidence and skills in beginner reading and writing through a range of exercises and literacy strategies. It will include learning to spell simple words and read short texts, for example stories or simple instructions. Learners will be supported to write full sentences, for example about themselves.

This course is for people who are more confident with their spoken English than with reading and writing. The course will use learners’ understanding of spoken sounds to help them make progress with reading and writing. The course will prepare learners for further study at Entry Level English Functional Skills.  

Are there any entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 and over by the 31st of August 2024. Learners will complete a short online or on-site assessment. You should have good knowledge of the English alphabet and script and speak English with a good degree of fluency.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. You will have a short interview with a tutor who will assess if the course is right for you.

How will I be taught?

This course will be taught on-site in Wood Green Library through a range of class activities and tutorials. There will also be online or take home paper based activities for you to work through.

What feedback will I get?

There will be immediate feedback given by the tutor both during the session and on submitted written pieces of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will give your views in an end of course survey, directly to your tutor and through class representatives.

What course can I do next?

You may continue with a Study Skills course or go on to undertake an Entry Level Functional Skills accreditation.

This course is for people who need support and to build confidence in basic literacy skills and written communication. English may be your first language or an additional language but you shodul be able to follow and engage in spoken discussions and instructions..
