English Skills Bridge

Course Details

What is this course about?

This 5 week non-accredited course is aimed at adults who wish to develop reading, writing and speaking and listening skills and work towards gaining a qualification in English at Level 1. The programme covers strategies to improve reading and writing at the required level. It also provides opportunities to study and practise discussion skills.

Are there any entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 or older by the 31st of August 2024. You will start by completing Maths and English assessments. The English assessment will need to identify gaps at Level 1. If you have a recent Entry 3 Functional Skills English qualification, we will still need to look at your English assessment results to assess your suitability.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. There will be an online or face to face interview with a tutor where you will complete short a short piece of writing and discuss if the course will meet your needs. If the course is not suitable, the tutor will advise you on a more suitable course to apply for.

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught as face to face classes at Haringey Learns, in Wood Green Library. Some sessions may be attended online, but only with prior approval from the tutor and in certain circumstances. All resources will be posted online. The course will consist of input sessions, group and individual tutorials, independent exercises, group tasks and quizzes as set by your tutor. The online classroom will be taught using MS Teams for Education and you will be given support to access your free learner account before starting your course.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work and using the BKSB platform.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning during tutorials. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. There are regular learner rep meetings which will be attended by your class rep. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end by completing an evaluation form. You may also complete GLA & OFSTED surveys.

What course can I do next?

Progression: You will be encouraged to enrol onto a course working towards a Level 1 accreditation or to undertake paid or voluntary work

Additional information

It is very important for you to access your classes regularly. If you are unable to attend a class, please notify your tutor. If you do not access classes during the first week or fail to attend for two consecutive classes without informing your tutor, you may lose your place of study.
