Course Details

What is this course about?

For English Speakers of Other Languages who want to develop their English skills along with their employability skills. Learners can specialise in retail, care or other vocational area. Learners will complete a portfolio for Ascentis.

Are there any entry requirements?

Yes, you will either need to

• complete an Entry 3 assessment

• or have an Entry 2 qualification in reading and writing

The class tutor may have an informal discussion with you to ensure this is the right class for you. 

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No, you will not need to have an interview before you enrol if you have an Entry 2 writing and speaking and listening exam pass

How will I be taught?

You will be taught face to face – using a variety of methods including:

Teams for Education

Independent assignments and homework

Small group work

Video, You Tube and other media

Quizzes and assessment

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course, you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning during tutorials. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end by completing an evaluation form. You may also complete GLA & OFSTED surveys.

Other ways to give feedback include via your class representatives elected in class, through the online platform and learner focus groups.

Progression: depending on the progress you make on the course you will be advised on the best suitable course for your needs and level.

Additional information

It is very important for you to attend your class regularly. If you are unable to attend a class, please notify your tutor. If you do not attend classes during the first week or fail to attend for three consecutive classes on the course without informing your tutor, you will lose your place of study.

Who is this course for?

You must be aged 19 or older by 31st of August 2024 and be eligible for publicly funded ESOL courses.
