Course Details

What is this course about?

This 12 week accredited course will prepare you to take the Maths Level 2 Functional Skills exam. In addition to consolidating your prior knowledge of ratios, proportions, fractions, decimals and percentages you will also use statistical methods to investigate situations and draw mathematical conclusions.

Are there any entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 or older by the 31st of August 2024. You will start by completing Maths and English assessments. The Maths assessment will identify a Level 2 Maths need. If you have a recent Level 1 Functional Skills Maths qualification we will still need to look at your Maths assessment results. Please note that you should have, or be working towards, Level 2 in English language skills for the Maths problem solving skills at this level. You should be able to calculate ratios and proportions involving scale solve problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages, making use of equivalences and convert between metric and imperial measures.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. There will be an online or face to face interview with a tutor where you will complete short maths exercises and discuss if the course will meet your needs. If the course is not suitable, the tutor will advise you on a more suitable course to apply for.

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught as 'hybrid' meaning you will be able to access the timetabled sessions in class at Haringey Learns at Wood Green Library or online, depending on what suits your learning style. How you will access the course should be agreed in advance with your tutor. For all learners, the course will consist of input sessions, group tutorials, independent exercises, group tasks and quizzes as set by your tutor.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work and using the BKSB platform.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning during tutorials. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end by completing an evaluation form. You may also complete GLA & OFSTED surveys.

What course can I do next?

Progression: You will be encouraged to enrol onto a course working towards a L3 accreditation or vocational course or to undertake paid or voluntary work.

Additional information

It is important for you to access every class in order to gain the support to achieve the qualification. If you are unable to attend a specific class please let your tutor know in advance. If you do not access your learning during the first week of the course or you miss 2 classes in a row you may lose your place on the course.
