Very popular and well regarded within the community here in our borough, avid Arsenal fan Stephen was elected to serve as a ward councillor for Noel Park on 17 September 2015.
He also served as Mayor between May 2017 and May 2018.
As a mark of respect to Stephen, the flag was lowered at George Meehan House in Wood Green today in acknowledgement of his contribution to Haringey and community life here.
The thoughts of everyone here at Haringey Council are with Stephen’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Lester Buxton, commented: “The passing of a former Mayor is always a sad occasion.
“Stephen was passionate about the causes that he supported, in particular his mayor charities as well as a constant supporter of Haringey Services like Haringey Young Musicians.
“Stephen, along with his wife Jennifer, have been constant supports for me during my time in office and I will miss sharing a cup of tea with Stephen in the Mayor’s parlour, hearing him reminisce about his time as Mayor.
“My thoughts are with his family and all of his friends.”
Speaking of her “shock” and “sadness” at Stephen’s passing, Cllr Peray Ahmet, the Leader of Haringey Council, said:
"Stephen was a hugely popular figure and well respected throughout the community, having been a long-term resident in Hornsey and a ward councillor in Noel Park.
“I know he was so proud to become Mayor and carried out his duties with pride and honour.
“He did so much for the people around him and raised significant funds for his two Mayoral charities – Mind in Haringey and Studio 306.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Stephen’s family and friends at this sad time. He will never be forgotten.”
