A recent spate of drain cover thefts across the borough is potentially putting pedestrians and road users in danger.
Missing grates, also known as gully covers, are dangerous to road users because holes in the road have the possibility to cause an accident. It can also lead to blocked drains and flooding due to debris not being caught by the cover.
Residents who notice the missing covers are being urged to contact the council on 020 8489 1000 Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and 020 8489 0000 outside work hours.
Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Resident Services and Tackling Inequality, said: “It is disgusting and completely irresponsible that thieves are potentially putting residents’ health, wellbeing and lives in danger by stealing gully covers to make extra cash.
“We are working with residents to fix any missing covers as a priority, as well as the police to make sure the criminals are brought to justice. Working together, we can ensure our roads are safe for everyone to use.”
Residents are asked to give the exact location of any missing covers that they notice such as a nearby door number, a lamppost identification number or if it is near a junction, so they can be found quickly and repaired.
