Custom and self-build housing
The government introduced the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 to encourage and support residents to build their own homes.
We are required to keep a register of individuals and associations of individuals who are seeking to acquire land in Haringey for their own self-build or custom housebuilding project.
Our self-build and custom housebuilding register is divided into 2 parts:
- part 1 keeps track of local demand for self-build and custom housebuilding, which must be met via the grant of sufficient development permissions for serviced plots of land
- part 2 keeps track of general demand for self-build and custom building, with no requirement to grant sufficient development permissions for serviced plots of land to meet this demand
What applicants should expect from being on the register
Haringey is one of the most densely populated local authorities in the country and there are considerable pressures on land available for development.
With a limited supply of land and competing development needs, finding additional plots of land that can be specifically used for self-build and custom-build is likely to be very challenging.
Please note that:
- the register does not operate as a waiting list
- while we have a duty to grant sufficient permissions for self-build and custom housebuilding plots, there is no requirement for a permission to specifically relate to the preferences expressed by those on the register
