School crossing patrols

Where school crossings are placed and how to request one, volunteering as a patrol officer.

School crossing patrols help children get to and from school safely.

Patrol officers can stop traffic for anyone wanting to cross the road, provided they are:

  • working at their official site
  • wearing the correct uniform

Placement of school crossing patrols

A school crossing patrol will:

  • be placed where there is the greatest need
  • not necessarily be directly outside a school

Requesting a school crossing patrol

Because of funding restrictions, we are unlikely to provide more school crossings.

To request a school crossing patrol, contact our school crossing patrol supervisor.

What we do

We will:

  • visit the area
  • check it meets the national criteria – this includes a vehicle and pedestrian count
