Certify a building for worship or marriage

How to certify a building for worship or marriage.

Buildings can be certified for both worship and marriage. There is a different process if you want to apply for an approved premies license to hold civil ceremonies

Certify a building to be a place of worship

You can certify a place of meeting for religious worship under the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855.

Certify a place of meeting for religious worship: form 76 on GOV.UK.

Certify a place of worship to hold marriage ceremonies

You can also apply to certify a place of worship to hold marriage ceremonies.

Certify a place of worship for marriage: form 78 on GOV.UK.

Apply to be an authorised person able to conduct marriage ceremonies

One year after a building has been registered for the solemnisation of marriages, the trustees or governing body can appoint an authorised person to attend marriages and sign the marriage schedule without the need for a registrar from the register office to attend.

Find out more about authorised persons on GOV.UK.
