Weights and measures

Part of: Trading Standards for businesses

Businesses must respect the rules on selling goods by weight or measure.

If you weigh or measure goods to sell to consumers, your equipment must be both suitable and accurate.

When we inspect businesses, we routinely check the accuracy of:

  • scales
  • spirit measuring instruments
  • petrol pumps
  • other weights and measures equipment

We check that customers get what they pay for.

For example, with our checks we make sure that a:

  • pint of beer really is a pint
  • petrol pump is dispensing at the correct pence per litre
  • pre-packed goods display the correct weight or measure
