Leisure centre changes

Leisure centres in Haringey will be directly managed by us from October 2024. Find out what's changing and what's staying the same.

Park Road, Tottenham Green and Broadwater Farm centres will be closed from 1 October to 6 October 2024. The centres will re-open on Monday 7 October 2024.

What's changing

Haringey is excited to be bringing our leisure facilities at Park Road Pool & Fitness, Tottenham Green Pool & Fitness and Broadwater Farm Community Centre back under direct council control on 1 October 2024.

After the transfer, these centres will stop being managed by Fusion Lifestyle and will form part of our new Active Wellbeing programme. You can access your new online services from this website on 11 October 2024.

Temporary service closure

The following leisure centres will be closed to the public for a 6-day handover period from 1 October to 6 October:

  • Park Road Pool and Fitness
  • Tottenham Green Pool and Fitness
  • Broadwater Farm Community Centre

We will use this handover period to train staff, perform essential maintenance works and make sure the centres are deep cleaned.

New River Sport and Fitness is open as normal.

Website and mobile app bookings

The new leisure centre websites and app will launch on Friday 11 October which will provide all the essential information you will need to know about what’s on at the centres. You’ll find all the updated information here.

You will need to download the new Haringey Active Wellbeing App. It’ll be available in the App store and Google Play from 11 October. You will need to re-register for your account and will be able to start booking activities once you have done this.

From the 7 to 13 October activities will be available but are not bookable. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

What's staying the same

We want to minimise any changes immediately after the handover, so there will be as little disruption for you as possible.

All opening hours and current bookings will remain the same from 7 October 2024.

Membership benefits and pricing

The membership benefits and the price that you paid to Fusion will remain unchanged at the point of transfer on the 1 October.

If you have a Park Road Gym and Swim membership then this will operate exactly as it did before. If you have a membership that covered all three of Fusion’s Haringey centres, then this will also remain the same.

At the point of transfer, you will not be able to access the facilities at New River Sports Centre.

We are planning to review all membership categories and concessions schemes during the period up to Christmas 2024 with a view to implementing any changes between January and March 2025.

Membership cards

The Council will be promoting the leisure centres and its external leisure activities under its new ’Active Wellbeing’ brand. You will start to see this appear on the new signage, uniforms and membership cards. Although you will still be able to use your existing Fusion membership after the Council takes back the leisure centres, we do intend to replace your existing membership card with a new Active Wellbeing Membership Card.

New cards will be available to collect from reception later in October 2024.

Activities and classes

Classes and programmes will be unchanged when the council takes over in October 2024. Once we have completed consultations with the community we will look to make improvements to programmes and equipment.

We will continue to operate the same class timetable following the transfer of services. In most cases, you will be taught by the same teacher or instructor.

Swimming lessons will continue at the same time and day and with your usual teacher. We will be moving to the Learn2 portal where you can continue to track your progress and achievements.

Event bookings and venue hire

You can continue to book birthday parties with Fusion as normal. Bookings made for after 7 October will automatically be transferred to Haringey Council. However, no bookings will be available for the period of 1 October to 6 October.

Repairs and improvements

Regular users of the centres will know that we are inheriting a backlog of maintenance and repairs at the sites. We are starting a significant package of improvement works:

  • Deep cleaning in every area of the buildings and cleaning the exterior areas of the buildings and car parks
  • Providing new cleaning equipment so that a higher standard of cleanliness can be achieved
  • Commencing a range of repairs in the changing rooms and toilets
  • Replacing all the computer and audio-visual equipment within the buildings
  • New signage, including new digital information systems to keep you better informed
  • New water coolers throughout the buildings
  • Removing old and broken equipment to make space for some interim new equipment in the gyms, studios and pools
  • Repairing and repainting ceilings
  • Commencing repairs on lighting, air handling and the pool plant

Alongside this, a more extensive programme of repairs and maintenance will run initially through to December and then second phase will run from February through to May.

We plan to invest over £3.6m in the next 12 months to improve the facilities and buildings. This is part of the Council’s commitment to ensure that we have clean, safe and well-maintained facilities to support your Active Wellbeing

Other forthcoming improvements

In addition to tackling the backlog of repairs and improving the cleaning of the facilities, the Council will be making some further key investments such as:

  • Staffing – we will inherit low staffing numbers from Fusion and therefore will be recruiting a significant number of additional staff which will address the shortage in lifeguards and front of house staffing.
  • Gym equipment – prior to January 2025, we will be looking to top up the range of gym equipment on offer as a prelude to a full refurbishment of the gyms in 2025. We will be working with gym users and staff to get the right mix of equipment for the new gyms.
  • Group exercise – we will be renewing all the sound systems in the studios and refreshing the equipment and expanding the range of classes on offer.
  • Energy management – we will be making investments in pool covers, more solar power and other energy reduction measures to reduce our carbon footprint and save money on our energy bills.
  • User involvement – we will be introducing several opportunities for all centre users and specific user groups to meet with the centre management and feedback on how the centres are being run and could be further developed.
