Haringey residents to help improve biodiversity and nature in the borough

Residents will now be able to help transform small greenspaces into thriving hubs of biodiversity and communal interaction.

The brand new Small Community Greenspaces project will prioritise areas that have a reduced greenspace and encourage community cohesion.

Small greenspaces across the borough will be improved and enhanced on an annual basis, with council officers working collaboratively with residents and fostering a sense of ownership and pride in our neighbourhoods along the way too.

Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Leisure, Cllr Emily Arkell, said:

“This scheme will not only enable our nature to thrive, but will also help to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.

“By creating these green oases within our communities, we’re providing opportunities for exercise, relaxation and social interaction, benefitting people of all ages.

“Small Community Greenspaces’ is not just about simply planting flowers - it's about nurturing connections, fostering stewardship and creating vibrant spaces where people and nature can thrive together.”

The initiative will encourage ‘community gardening,’ with residents coming together to design and cultivate small greenspaces. They will also have the opportunity to shape the area according to their preferences and choose suitable plants within the allocated budget.

Open to people of all ages and abilities, with a particular focus on engaging those aged over 65, enthusiastic gardeners and families, this project will connect like-minded people through community gardening days and they – in turn - will contribute to the beauty of their local surroundings via their ongoing maintenance efforts.
