A part of Parkland Walk – a 4.5m pedestrian and cycle route between Muswell Hill and Finsbury Park and therefore the capital’s longest local nature reserve – the bridge on Stanhope Road needs replacing to guarantee a 120-year lifespan.
The best design option was chosen following a co-production exercise and the ecological benefits to the immediate area include a biodiversity uplift of 13 per cent. To replace any trees lost as part of the project, the council will plant 10 news ones in local streets.
Preparation and enabling work began in March and continued throughout April.
From Monday 13 May, works will commence on the Parkland Walk to clear the vegetation necessary to undertake the bridge reconstruction.
The main works to Stanhope Road bridge are programmed to begin in early June with the introduction of a full closure of Stanhope Road for approximately 6 weeks. This road closure will allow for the demolition of the existing structure and installation of new foundations.
Traffic diversions will be in place for motor vehicles, with buses using an alternative route via Archway.
Following this closure, further works will be carried out under single alternative lane traffic signals during the project.
To install the new bridge deck, there will be a further two-week closure of Stanhope Road in October.
