With schools in the borough closing from this Friday (25 October 2024) onwards, there are a number of activities and events scheduled as part of our Black History Month (BHM) celebrations this weekend and beyond.
There are two Arts and Crafts opportunities for children aged four to 12 to make Maasai Beaded Bracelet at St Ann’s Library on Saturday (26 October 2024, 10:30am – 12noon) and next Tuesday (29 October 2024, 10:30am – 12noon). Younger children will need carer/parental assistance and those under nine should be accompanied by a carer/parent.
You and your child can also create your own scrapbooks of your favourite Black artists, athletes, historical figures, news readers and pop stars at Hornsey Library on Monday (28 October 2024, 3:30pm – 4:30pm, Suitable for ages 4+).
Get your groove on down to Stroud Green and Harringay Library on Friday (25 October 2024, 5:30pm – 6:30pm), when Cuban singer-songwriter Gianni Morales and his band will be performing traditional songs as part of this year’s theme for BHM – ‘Reclaiming Narratives.’
It promises to be an electric and vibrant evening of dance and music, with Gianni interpreting bolero, guaracha and rumba during this Young Adults event. Space is limited, so please book your FREE ticket early to avoid disappointment
Author Alesia Greenidge will be presenting an interactive event about some of the Universal Negro Improvement Association & Afrikan Communities League (UNIA & ACL) female members at Marcus Garvey Library this Saturday (26 October 2024, 3pm – 4:30pm).
Fellow writer Jocelyn Robson will be giving a talk about her new book ‘Elizabeth Heyrick – The Making of an Anti-Slavery Campaigner’ at the same venue next Monday (28 October 2024, 2pm – 3:30pm). A Q&S session will follow Robson’s talk and copies of the book will be available to purchase from her afterwards.
Young adults will be able to unleash their inner DJ and dive into the vibrant world of Afrobeat during an Afrobeat Open Deck Day at Wood Green Library this Saturday (26 October 2024, 12noon – 2:30pm).
For two and a half hours, participants will be given an initial introduction to Afrobeat, see live demonstrations and get hands-on mixing experience with some interactive practice – all under the guidance of an experienced DJ.
While this event isn’t on next week or even this month, it’s still one for your diaries as Library Lates returns to Wood Green Library with an Afro Culture Heritage Fest on Friday 8 November 2024 (7pm – 11pm).
There remains some activities and events to experience and enjoy as part of the Family Learning Festival too.
You can test your knowledge of the animal kingdom with a fun Curious Creature Quiz at St Ann’s Library on Saturday (26 October, 2pm – 3pm) and next Wednesday (30 October 2024, 2pm – 3pm). The quiz is for children aged seven to 12 and those under nine should be accompanied by a carer/parent.
There’s an opportunity too to learn some Portuguese and Spanish while creating your very own paper puzzles at Hornsey Library next Wednesday afternoon (30 October 2024, 3:30pm – 4:30pm).
Children can learn to Salsa next Monday (28 October 2024, 3pm – 4:30pm) and Tuesday (29 October 2024, 3pm – 4:30pm) at Coombes Croft Library, where they can also enjoy a Diwali Arts and Crafts session on Thursday 31 October (11am – 12noon).
With Halloween on the horizon too, they can enjoy a storytime session next Tuesday (29 October 2024, 10:30am – 11am) at Hornsey Library or create a Bat Hat at Marcus Garvey Library on Thursday (31 October 2024, 11am – 12noon).
Meanwhile, Hornsey Library will be hosting a VANITAS exhibition by the artist IMPREINT this weekend (Saturday 26 October 2024: 9am – 5pm, Sunday 27 October 2024: 12noon – 4pm).
Inspired by family and heritage, the ‘Our Ancestor’s legacy. The Past, The Present & The Future’ wall art exhibition by Syreeta King will run through to the end of this Black History Month (Thursday 31 October 2024) at Coombes Croft and Marcus Garvey Libraries.
