The impact of changing schools in-year
Moving your child from one primary or secondary school to another is a big decision for you and your child.
Moving schools can be highly disruptive to children and parents. It may:
- badly impact relationships your child currently has with other children
- mean your child misses important work
- mean your child cannot do the same subjects chosen for their exams
- affect your child’s siblings, if they have any
- become difficult to manage the school drop-off and pick-up if you have children at different schools that may have different term dates
To make the best decision for your child, we recommend asking them if they want to move school. If they tell you they’re being bullied or not getting on with other children, speak to your child’s form tutor or head of year as they may be able to help.
If you’ve done this and still have concerns, make an appointment to speak to the school’s headteacher.
If you still want to apply to move schools, see applying for a school place in-year.
