Where and when we grit

Part of: Winter road maintenance and gritting

There is a priority system for gritting during snow and ice conditions. This is to make sure key routes stay open.

Higher priority roads and pavements are treated first. Once these have been done, lower priority roads are gritted if we are able to.

View the winter gritting map for road and pavement priority.

When we grit

We receive daily winter weather forecasts for Haringey. We can then predict when there is a chance of frost, freezing road temperatures or snow.

There are 3 types of gritting services which are done at different times depending on the forecast and weather conditions.

Pre-treatment

Priority 1 roads and pavements are gritted before snowfall. This is to help guard against snow settling.

Post-treatment

We will grit roads and pavements during or after snowfall. This will help limit the amount of snow that settles. It will also reduce ice forming as the snow is compacted by traffic.

Frost patrols

If there is a forecast for sub-zero overnight temperatures (or near) causing frost or ice, we will carry out frost patrols.

They take place on roads and pavements based on the following:

  • roads with the steepest gradients, where frost or ice creates a high risk for road traffic
  • roads with steep gradients that may ice over for longer periods due to a higher elevation or greater exposure
  • heavily used pedestrian areas with the steepest gradients
  • bridges and steps in exposed locations that are likely to ice over for longer

Grit bins

The grit bins on our streets are available for residents to use to keep streets clear of ice and snow. Please feel free to use the grit bins during the snow and frost season.

Search our winter gritting map to find your nearest grit bin and see the gritting priority routes.

How to use the grit bins

  1. Use a shovel and wear gloves to protect your hands.
  2. If there's already snow on the ground, clear as much as you can before putting down the grit.
  3. Spread the grit evenly across the surface.
  4. Be careful! Make sure you wear the correct footwear and clothing when working in the cold weather. Please protect your back from injury by lifting correctly.

Please do not use hot water. This will melt the snow but may replace it with black ice, increasing the risk of injury.

Empty or damaged bins

If you find a damaged or empty grit bin, please contact Veolia.
