Walking to and from school helps children:
- learn road safety, awareness and orientation skills
- develop their confidence to walk on their own when they're older
- arrive more ready to learn
- build stamina and improve mental health
Walk to School Week and International Walk to School Month
Every day can be a walking day – but there are also 2 events focused on walking to school each year:
- Walk to School Week in the third week in May
- International Walk to School Month in October
You can get walk-to-school resources on the Living Streets website.

Walk Once a Week
The Walk Once a Week (WOW) badge scheme encourages children to walk to school and collect badges.
Schools will record who walks to school and will reward them with a badge. There are 11 different badges to collect.
You can get WOW resources on the Living Streets website.
Walking Bear 'We Love Clean Air'
Hari Bear
This is a free resource kit for all our infants and early years pupils.
Classes compete against each other to see who has the most walkers.
The winning class will get to keep Hari Bear for a short time. Children will also be allowed to take him home with his walking diary.
Contact the Smarter Travel team to take part and get the Hari Bear resources.
Finding Hari
Finding Hari is the next stage of our Hari Bear activity. It's a great learning experience to start map-reading skills.
We can set up a course at a local park and share maps with schools. Children visit the park and try to find Hari using the maps.
Hari can be hidden in Bruce Castle, Chestnuts, Lordship Rec, Markfield and Priory Parks.
Contact the Smarter Travel team to set up this orienteering event for your school.
