If you are not on the electoral register:
- you cannot vote in elections or referendums held in the United Kingdom, including local and parliamentary (general) elections
- you may find it harder to get a loan, mortgage, finance agreement, or even a mobile phone contract as the electoral register is used by credit reference agencies as part of their checks
By law, you must register to vote when asked to do so or you could fined up to £80.
