The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Lester Buxton, helped round off proceedings at the launch of the 'Women Who Grow' photography exhibition at the Wolves Lane Centre on Sunday (31 March 2024).
This global awareness occasion provides us all with an annual chance to shine a light on the important issues facing women today and the ongoing struggle for gender equality, as well as to focus on – and learn about – the fascinating stories of women past and present.
There was an exciting programme of activities and events that took place in Haringey over the 31 days overall, with some of the standout, undoubted highlights being as follows:
- A walking tour of Muswell Hill, taking in the hidden history of the area, from suffragettes to the feminist punk band The Slits
- An afternoon of feminist craft, storytelling and Afro-Latin music by renowned group Las Witchas! at Bruce Castle Museum
- The opening of the new ‘Land of Laundries’ exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum, where sculptor Al Johnson explored the symbolism of laundry and the often overlooked stories and voices of women and their work
- A day-long event to promote women’s health at Tottenham Town Hall, with workshops, talks and stalls
- A seed festival at Wolves Lane that celebrated women’s historic role as the protector of seeds and agricultural heritage
