Gunay Toguz – the sole director and designated premises supervisor at Ceylan Supermarket (628 Lordship Lane, Wood Green, London, N22 5JH) – sold a bottle of WKD Blue Original to a minor during a Trading Standards test purchase operation on 16 February 2023, which is an offence under Section 146(1) of the Licensing Act 2003.
At the hearing on Thursday 11 April 2024 at Highbury Magistrates Court, Mr Toguz pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £1,038 and ordered to pay £800 in costs, so £1,838 in total. A 28-day collection order was also made at the Court.
Eubert Malcolm, Haringey Council’s Assistant Director for Stronger and Safer Communities, said: “This case serves as a timely reminder to businesses in our borough to take their licensing conditions seriously.
“If Haringey residents have any information about businesses who are flouting these regulations, we would encourage them to share it with us so that we can take action to protect our young people together. There are absolutely no excuses whatsoever for selling age-restricted products to children.”
