The announcement by Transport for London (TfL) this week to tackle problematic parking of dockless e-bikes is welcome news for our borough.
Along with other councils, we have campaigned for more controls and the introduction of regulation, so are pleased those calls have been headed.
We want to encourage more people to cycle but far too many e-bikes are dumped on pavements meaning pedestrians, disabled and older people and those with buggies and pushchairs are finding it difficult to come out of their own home and walk down the street. In some cases residents are having to change their route completely which is totally unacceptable.
TfL could fine providers if their customers do not leave bikes in the correct place on red routes, as well as seize abandoned bikes.
The initiative also includes significant investment in thousands of designated parking spaces across the capital’s boroughs.
In Haringey, we are calling on providers to introduce much faster response times to pick up abandoned bikes, a quicker and easier way to report dumped bikes and anti-hacking measures to stop bikes being stolen so often.
I hope this latest move by TfL will go some way to helping improve the regulation of where bikes are left in Haringey and we can all see the positive impact of being able to move freely around the borough.
