The strategy, designed to encourage a consistent and forward-thinking approach to traffic management, was agreed by Cabinet last night (16 July 2024).

With a growing population that is living longer and a borough that continues to attract more residents and visitors, it is crucial that roads across the borough are designed to meet the needs of the community as well as enhance the independence of those living with a disability. In addition to this, by supporting local businesses and ensuring their success, we can build a thriving local economy.

Aiming to uphold parking standards despite road space competition, it will establish a framework for the ongoing development of an innovative and sustainable service that benefits all the people of Haringey.

Residents and stakeholders across the borough feel the impact of parking and as the population continues to expand with new housing developments as well as a growing economy, individuals are adopting new ways of travel.

The new Parking Strategy, which was co-produced with the community through consultation and in-depth review sessions, sets out objectives to roll out initiatives safely and efficiently.

Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services, said:

Haringey is home to over a quarter of a million residents, thousands of businesses, a premiership football stadium, and Alexandra Palace - an iconic landmark in the in the heart of the borough.

With a strong diverse community like ours, we know how important it is for everyone to have fair access to parking. However, we know how tough this can be – particularly as we address challenges such as tackling inequality, responding to the climate emergency, and improving health.

Parking management is one of the most important tools and therefore this strategy will support our vision and our community. Our residents have been at the heart of this initiative and without their input, we would not have been able to create this.

By setting out a clear list of priorities and a pragmatic approach, we can utilise the limited parking spaces available for those in greatest need as our population grows and our borough continues to develop.
