Plans have been approved at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (November 12) to acquire the vital new accommodation as part of the redevelopment of the Mecca Bingo site on Lordship Lane and the former Hornsey Police Station site on Tottenham Lane.
At a time when affordable housebuilding is at its lowest point for a number of years, Haringey Council has made it one of their priorities to deliver of a new generation of 3,000 high-quality council homes by 2031.
The development on the Mecca Bingo site will include ten three-bedroom homes and seven five-bedroom homes, marking the first of this type in the council’s delivery programme.
Cllr Sarah Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing & Planning and Deputy Leader of the Council, said:
“This is another great milestone as we look to provide much-needed homes for our residents. In the face of the housing crisis we need to secure as much affordable housing as we can for local people.
"At the same time, we need to create great quality council homes that will stand the test of time. We want to see great energy standards, size standards, design standards and real attention to landscaping and facilities around new buildings.
"The new council homes at these sites in Wood Green and Hornsey will bring much-needed family-sized accommodation for residents with children – especially vulnerable children – and will go to local people. They’ll be energy efficient too – helping keep bills down at a time when energy prices are high.”
78 additional new council homes will be delivered on the Mecca Bingo site that will create 636 student bedspaces, flexible commercial space and a park for everyone to enjoy in Wood Green. The development will be undertaken by Atri7 2 Limited and Fusion Global Management.
The acquisition of 8 other homes on the former Hornsey Police Station site will also create 21 market homes and associated landscaping. This will be carried out by Dixon8 Limited.
