How to know if your child is missing school

Part of: School attendance and absence

If your child is between 11 and 16, ask to see their school-home contact book/homework diary every evening and sign the book at the end of the week. This will tell you what lessons they’ve been to and what homework they should be doing.

Most schools will call or message you on the first day your child misses school.

Some schools allow parents to check online records to see if their child is at school. Ask your child’s school if this is something they do.

If you're worried your child is not going to school, talk to a school staff member like an attendance officer, class teacher or head of year.
