What happens if your child does not go to school

If your child misses 10 school days or more without reason, the school lets our educational welfare service know.

If your child continues to miss school, the school may agree to put your child on attendance report.

Support to get your child to school

The school and our education welfare service will support you in improving your child's school attendance.

Each case is looked at individually. The education welfare officer will tell you about:

  • your legal duties to make sure your child goes to school regularly
  • ways to resolve issues that may stop your child going to school

Further action we may take

If your child’s absence from school is without good reason and fails to improve, we will consider taking the matter further. This could be:

  • your child continues to miss school
  • you did not cooperate with getting your child to go to school
  • our support and guidance did not result in you making sure your child regularly went to school
