You might automatically get a Disabled Person's Freedom Pass if you can prove you meet certain criteria – known as 'automatic eligibility'.
If you meet any of these criteria, apply for a Disabled Person's Freedom pass with the right evidence.
If you're blind or partially sighted
You need to provide a copy of your Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI) showing you're severely sight impaired or blind.
The CVI used to be known as a BD8 certificate.
If you have a disability or injury that affects your ability to walk
You'll automatically get a Freedom Pass if you can show you get 1 of the following benefits.
Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
You need to provide a current copy of your entitlement letter showing you get the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
You need to provide a current copy of your entitlement letter. This letter must show you get PIP because you cannot walk more than 50 metres or have a score of 8 points or more under the ‘moving around’ activity of the mobility component.
War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement
You need to provide a current copy of your entitlement letter.
Armed Forces and Reserve Forces (Compensation) Scheme
You need to provide proof that you've both:
- received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels 1 to 8
- been certified as having a 'permanent and substantial disability that causes an inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking'
If you have a learning disability
You need to provide a complete copy of your Personal Independence Payment (PIP) entitlement letter.
This letter must show you receive the mobility component of PIP and have 10 points for Descriptor E under the 'planning and following journeys' activity.
If you do not meet any of these criteria
You might still be able to apply under different criteria.
