Urban characterisation study

The urban characterisation study is one of the key evidence studies to support Haringey’s Local Plan, including:

  • our emerging Tottenham Area Action Plan (AAP)
  • Development Management policies
  • Sites Allocations DPD
  • future policies such as the planned Wood Green AAP

The study helps us identify areas with high townscape or landscape value to:

  • identify appropriate locations for tall buildings and high density
  • identify issues adversely affecting the quality of townscapes
  • guide the urban design of new development in regeneration areas
  • protect significant vistas and view corridors

We hope that it will also provide a useful resource for those seeking background information on some of what makes different areas of Haringey distinctive, interesting and beautiful.

The study was completed in February 2015 and can be downloaded here:

Conservation area character appraisals

Section 69 of the Planning Act 1990 says "Every local planning authority shall from time to time determine which parts of their area are areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance, and shall designate those areas as conservation areas".

Haringey has 29 such areas designated over 41 years. Under Section 71 of the Act, once an area has been designated "It shall be the duty of a local planning authority from time to time to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of any parts of their area which are conservation areas.

Potential tall buildings locations validations study

The main purpose of this study is to assess the locations already established by us and determine the types of design/policy limitations that may be appropriate in terms of place-making, townscape and landscape, and views.
