Victoria Crescent sustainable drainage system project

Part of: Sustainable drainage schemes and proposals

We invested in water management improvements to Victoria Crescent. These promote the appeal and usability of the courtyard while helping to clean and collect rainwater running off from nearby flats. This offsets the risk of flooding and pollution in the nearby rivers. Visually attractive appearance and interactive aspects were included in the design of the rainwater management features.

The key SuDS features here are:

  • a series of rain gardens and circular basins (a slightly sunken planted area)
  • a series of swales (open channels) to carry water between the basin and rain garden
  • a series of mounds (artificial elevation of earth) to reduce the surface water flow
  • a small bridge, benches, boulders for play features
  • meadow-style planting
