Haringey is proud to be an inclusive and welcoming borough and ensuring all the borough’s families have safe, secure and sustainable homes is at the heart of proposals out for consultation.
The council has undertaken a comprehensive review of potential locations that can accommodate six much-needed permanent pitches on vacant council land.
Now it is giving local people the opportunity to have their say on the suggestions for possible sites on small plots of land at The Roundway N17, Brookside Green N17 and Clyde Road N15, adjacent to an existing GRT site.
Cllr Sarah Williams, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member Housing and Planning, said:
I’m delighted to be announcing proposals for developing the first new Gypsy, Roma and Traveller sites in the capital for three decades.
Not only is it a fitting move for our borough, which prides itself on being welcoming and diverse, it also aligns completely with our commitment as a council to providing 3,000 new, affordable and great quality homes for the future. This includes specialist housing to meet the needs of all of our communities.
The Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community are among the most discriminated against groups in the UK and face critical challenges in accessing housing that meets their cultural needs.
Our proposals aim to address this, and I would encourage people living locally to share their views on the suggested sites.
Like all local authorities, Haringey is required by law to find sites for the GRT community who have a connection to the borough.
As well as the existing site at Clyde Road, the council is also responsible for long-standing pitches at Wallman Place, N22.
Engagement on the proposals runs until 22 December 2024.
Individual booklets and survey questionnaires for the three sites have been sent to households surrounding each one. Details of public engagement events can also be found in this document.
An online platform has also been created for The Roundway N17, Brookside Green N17 and Clyde Road N15 to provide background and for residents to share their views.
