Ceremonies outside of England and Wales

Special rules apply to marriages and civil partnerships outside England and Wales, including abroad.

If you're getting married or having a civil partnership outside of England or Wales, we can only help you if you're a Haringey residents who:

• is British
• is from certain Commonwealth countries

Please email us stating you and your partners nationalities and countries of marriage or civil partnership to see if we can help you with paperwork for a marriage or civil partnership outside England or Wales.

Marriages and civil partnerships in Scotland

If you want to get married or have a civil partnership in Scotland, you should give notice to the registrar for the district in Scotland where the marriage is to take place. You don't need to live in Scotland to give notice there. Notice may be given by post or in person. In such circumstances, notice would not be necessary in England or Wales.

Marriages and civil partnerships in Northern Ireland

You cannot give notice of marriage to take place in Northern Ireland at an English, Welsh or Scottish Register Office.

There is no provision under the law of Northern Ireland for a notice of marriage of a same-sex couple to be attested. Under the law of Northern Ireland these are treated as civil partnerships.

If you live in England or Wales and want to get married to an opposite sex partner in Northern Ireland, you can give notice by post to the registrar in the district where the marriage is to take place. You don't need to live in Northern Ireland to give notice there.
